As Indonesia approached the pivotal February 2024 elections, the fusion of artificial intelligence (AI) with political strategies emerged as a defining factor. In this situational report, we explore the innovative and controversial dimensions of AI in the country's electoral process, shedding light on the challenges faced and the global initiatives undertaken. Importantly, we bring a unique perspective on navigating these complexities, drawing insights from Ushahidi's mission and strategic vision.

The Shifting Campaign Paradigm

In a departure from traditional campaign methods, candidates, including the prominent figure General Prabowo Subianto, embraced novel approaches. A once formidable military figure, the general reshaped his image with the catchphrase "gemoy," resonating with the younger demographic through relatable and approachable content on TikTok and Instagram. These social media platforms quickly became battlegrounds for engagement, with candidates sharing their message and manifestos with the aim of targeting the significant demographic of young voters.

Deepfake Challenges

However, the deployment of AI wasn't without its share of ethical dilemmas. The rise of deepfake videos, like in the case of the Golkar political party's resurrection of former dictator Suharto, raised critical questions about the responsible use of AI in political processes.

Government's Stand: Addressing Ethical Concerns

In response to the ethical challenges posed by AI, the Indonesian government took a proactive stance, emphasizing responsible development and utilization of AI technologies. The government reiterated its commitment to addressing challenges such as misinformation, job losses, and data privacy, recognizing the importance of safeguarding public welfare.

A Collective Approach

The global tech community, including major players like Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok, and OpenAI, acknowledged the role of AI in shaping political landscapes. Their collaborative pact, forged during the Munich Security Conference, reflects a united front against the creation and spread of misleading content.
