Presidential Elections Announcement: The Aftermath
Ushahidi is still monitoring the situation on the ground, and below is a summary of the opinions we have received on the Uchaguzi platform to-date:
Events:
- IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati gazetted Dr William Ruto and Rigathi Gachagua as President-elect and Deputy President-elect, respectively.
- It is one day since the announcement of the presidential election, and CNN has reported that calm has returned to Kisumu after protests broke out in areas such as Kondele following the presidential announcement. Further, the country has experienced calm but with less activity than during normalcy. Many roads across the country are reported to be clear and safe to travel. A clarion for peace from religious leaders who urged Kenyans to remain peaceful and leaders to work together to foster a united Kenya.
- The splinter IEBC commissioners that disputed the presidential result are Juliana Cherera (Vice Chairperson), Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit and Justus Nyang'aya. They held a second presser to provide details of their dispute. They claimed that the final tally of the presidential election results was not brought before the commission for processing. The commissioners said that the aggregation of the results were not mathematically correct and that the results did not include totals of registered voters, votes cast or rejected votes.
- Azimio coalition continues to reject the presidential results, with Raila Odinga giving his first statement since the announcement. He commended his supporters for remaining calm and urged them not to take the law into their own hands. He noted that they are pursuing lawful channels to invalidate what he termed ‘Mr. Chebukati’s illegal and unconstitutional pronouncement’. In the same breadth, the US Embassy urged those aggrieved to address concerns through legal mechanisms.
- President-elect William Ruto is today expected to meet the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Kenya Kwanza elected leaders, just as Azimio elected leaders will also meet today.
Security Issues
As highlighted in the summary below, security issues form the second highest number of reports we have received. It is only overshadowed by the opinions and sentiments being exchanged in conversations around the election process.
Events:
- A young man was reportedly stabbed to death along the Raila Educational Center wall heading to Kisumu Ndogo in Kibra. He was pronounced dead at Mbagathi Hospital. (Verified tweet from CFK Africa). Additionally, rowdy youth in Dagoreti north - Kabiro ward, and Kayole, took advantage of the demonstrations after the announcement to terrorize and steal from residents.
- The missing IEBC returning officer Daniel Mbolu Musyoka’s body was found in Kajiado, as confirmed by Loitoktok Police Commander Kipruto Ruto.
- Red Cross staff were attacked when responding to the needs of people affected by electrical disturbances in Kisumu.
